Even if June doesn’t mean the coming of new daily routines in your household, there’s a chance that longer days and beckoning beaches can be distracting to a musician’s practice habits. But a change in routine can prove a great opportunity to re-boot. It might be time to put a hold on scales, repertoire-crunching and checking off boxes. 1 - Play the Game

2 - Who’s That Girl?

Musicians and composers are endless sources of great stories. When we’re busy studying a piece, we may not think to take time to know more about who wrote it. Check out that biography that’s crossed your mind. Learn about a branch of music history you’ve never considered before (I’m looking at you, didgeridoo). Take Bernstein to the beach, Williams to the woods, or Prince on the plane. For those who enjoy a good critical mind, check out Alex Ross. “Ghost Rider” [list my favorites]

3 - The Spirit of Radio

In 1988, the 14-year-old version of me was approached by three high school juniors to play in a band. We mostly covered popular songs of the day. As simple as it sounds, the act of listening to something from the radio and copying it on your instrument is one of the best exercises you can do to strengthen your ear. Regardless of your age, this is fun and rewarding

4 - Happiness is a Warm Gun

Think of a three-month target. Aim. Shoot! What’s that song you’ve been avoiding learning? Think you could write an arrangement but have never tried? What about performing?
